Help Restore Marine Ecosystems in Torquay/Geelong

Shuck Don't Chuck, The Nature Conservancy’s shell recycling initiative, is calling on hospitality venues in Torquay and Geelong to join the effort to restore shellfish reef ecosystems in Port Phillip Bay.

A partnership between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and B-Alternative, Shuck Don’t Chuck collects used oyster, mussel, and scallop shells from restaurants, venues, and seafood wholesalers, recycling them as a key component of TNC’s shellfish reef restoration projects. The program aims to reduce landfill waste while supporting marine biodiversity and contributing to the restoration of vital marine habitats. To date, TNC has restored 12 hectares of shellfish reefs in Port Phillip Bay, including in Geelong. These reefs are creating cleaner waters, more fish, and homes for hundreds of other species.

We invite Torquay and Geelong hospitality venues to participate in Shuck Don’t Chuck and become part of an important environmental initiative. By joining forces with us, your venue can play a crucial role in safeguarding our marine ecosystems for future generations.

Joining the Shuck Don't Chuck program allows venues to collaborate with like-minded businesses and organisations dedicated to environmental sustainability.

Participating venues will enjoy numerous benefits, including:

Reducing landfill waste by recycling oyster, mussel, and clam shells

Supporting the restoration of shellfish reef ecosystems in the area

Enhancing your venue's sustainability credentials and environmental stewardship

Gaining exposure as a responsible business committed to environmental conservation

Getting involved is easy! Simply follow these steps:

  • Collect oyster, mussel, and clam shells at your venue.

  • Rinse the shells thoroughly to remove any food residue or contaminants.

  • Contact us to schedule regular pickups of the collected shells

  • Our team will collect the shells and ensure they are used to support the restoration of important habitats.

The best part? The collection fee costs you less than it would to send the shells to landfill.

Participating venues will receive recognition for their contribution to the program, including mentions in program materials, social media promotion, and acknowledgment as environmental champions. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your venue's commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement.
